The Importance of Networking and Networks

The Importance of Networking and Networks

The world is super-connected today 24/7 and networking as a professional and social skill has never been easier nor more in demand.

Networking is like a choreography and whether you do the dance well or not is pretty much down to the effort you put into practicing. Feeling a little curious? Read on!

For some people networking conjures up images of ordeal by fire, cringeworthy inauthentic small talk, pushy people trying to sell you something; others love it and can't get enough of it. What if I told you that networking is something you already know how to do?

Start from where you are

You already have a network of friends and family as well as your own social media networks, and through those connections, you have access to their networks. You'd be amazed at who the people you know are connected to. Make it your business to find out!

How do you actually do it?

Networking is not about having the loudest voice in the room or being an extrovert. It's all about being a great listener, shining the light on the other person and getting them to talk about themselves. It's about building potential relationships, but in a marathon, not a sprint, and thinking how can I help this person, rather than what can this person do for me?

Where do you do it?

You can network literally anywhere there are people, in person, online, and on professional networking platforms like LinkedIn. Have a short elevator pitch, some icebreakers, start some great conversations and always follow up. There is an etiquette to networking so once you have the connections, keep them warm. You never know where that chance conversation or encounter can lead the arc of your life or your career.

Networks and the Hidden Job Market

Think about the connections you have and those you would like to have and come up with a strategy for building your professional network and accessing the hidden job market where jobs are not advertised and only found out through word of mouth, referrals, and networks. Don't be left out in the cold!
