How to make a great first impression and build rapport

How to make a great first impression and build rapport

Prepping for an interview? Maybe feeling a little nervous? Relax, you don't need to be, I'm going to share a secret with you.

Build rapport

Apart from preparing really well, dressing the part and being punctual, one of the most important things you can do in an interview is to build rapport and get a dynamic conversation going with the interviewer. First impressions really count, and the interviewer is waiting for you to show them what you can do. They also want to get a sense of what it would be like working with you and how you could fit into their team dynamics.

Power of a smile

It's really all about relationships so don't let your nerves make you forget to smile. Did you know when you smile you release endorphins and other feel-good chemicals in your body? Even looking at people who are smiling has the same effect! When someone smiles at you, there is an intangible positive energy transfer, smiles really are contagious and a universal way of saying hey I'm friendly, open, and someone who is interested in people.

Storytelling

Storytelling in your interview is another fantastic way to do build rapport and a sense of trust and connection. Use relevant mini stories that give context and establish relevance backing up your answers, showing why you are a great fit for the role, and that you really get the vision and ethos of the organisation. Story telling can help really help reveal your personality, highlight your uniqueness, illustrate skills and strengths, and make you really memorable. It's not just about facts and data; enjoying listening to stories is wired into our DNA as humans so you have a captive audience!

Above all, be yourself

Authenticity is a great bridge builder. Let that sense of connection show that you are someone they can like and trust and who shares the same professional outlook and priorities, but with a unique something that they need but don't yet have in their team! Don't forget to have some great questions to ask when they ask you if you have any to really showcase your enthusiasm and seal the deal!
